A Creative, If You Will

This post is going to be a little bit different than the other ones because I wanted to talk about what being a creative, or an artist, means to me and what it kind of entails. This entire post may just seem like I'm rambling as you read it, so I apologize in advance.
To me, being a creative is putting something that moves you. Whether it's writing, drawing or painting, photography, or music- it's just what you feel called to do and what you're passionate about. I think there is this misconception that being an artist is something that is always easy and effortless to do. I'll admit there are times where ideas just come to me, and it's easy to piece something together. However, there are also a lot of times where I just feel really discouraged and experience serious creativity blocks. I feel like creating takes encompasses of passion and emotion, on top of those good ideas, and sometimes one of those components just isn't there and it's hard to work around. Being an artist means putting in long hours and occasionally having to work through a major funk just like any other job, but also knowing your limits and when it's time for you to take a break.
As a creative, you're going to hear criticisms. You're going to be overlooked and you're going to hit creativity blocks time and time again. It's important to not let these things discourage you or turn you away. Those less than satisfactory experiences and those rough spots are what makes it real. I'll be the first to say that if you love what you're doing wholeheartedly, it will all be worth it.
Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and advocate for you work and your talent. Take pride in your gift and what you create. Never forget that your work speaks for you, but your character does as well. Shine in any room, under any scope, by staying true to who you are no matter where your creative journey takes you.
Don't hesitate to branch out- make friends, make connections. I've always felt like surrounding myself with other artists makes for such great experiences and potential opportunities, and builds up a loving support system like no other. There's nothing like having people around you who just get you, if that makes sense. There is so much love out there in the art community, and it amazing to witness others growing in their craft. It's amazing being able to share what you know and love with one another.
As artists, people tend to write our skills and our passion off as disposable. Contrary to all judgment and doubt, it is completely possible to flourish and prosper while doing what we love. To live life as an artist is to live life with your work cut out for you, but it's worth it for sure.
